Becoming an ADI with DRIVE Bedfordshire

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before getting started, make sure you meet the official DVSA eligibility criteria:


  • Age: Must be at least 21 years old.


  • Licence: Hold a full UK or EU/EEA driving licence for a minimum of 3 years.


  • Suitability: Be considered a "fit and proper" person by the DVSA.

Step 2: Get a DBS Check & Apply to the DVSA

  • DBS Check: Apply for a brand-new Criminal Record Check (DBS) specifically for driving instructors.


  • DVSA Registration: Once your DBS disclosure number arrives, apply online via GOV.UK to register as a trainee instructor with the DVSA.

The DVSA tests your theoretical and hazard recognition.


  • Format: 100 multiple-choice questions and a Hazard Perception test.


  • Pass Mark: 85/100 on multiple choice, 57/75 on hazard perception.

To apply for a DVSA Trainee Licence PDI Pink Badge, the DVSA requires 40 hours of instructor training not including your part 2 prep (hours must be in addition.


  • DVSA In-Car Requirement: The DVSA rules mandate that at least 10 hours of this training must be done in-car.


  • DRIVE Bedfordshire Recommended Hours: While 10 hours is the legal minimum, we recommend completing 15–20 hours of focused in-car training to build solid, practical teaching techniques before heading out with real pupils.
